Welcome to Urumqi!
Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Located at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, the city is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with vast and fertile plains. The locals affectionately call it “Urumqi,” which means “beautiful pasture.”
Urumqi is the farthest city from any ocean in the world, the geographic center of Asia, and a vital stop along the northern route of the ancient Silk Road. Covering about one-sixth of China’s total area, Xinjiang is the largest provincial region in the country.
It has a typical temperate continental arid climate, with an average annual natural precipitation of 155 millimeters. Snowmelt from the surrounding mountains feeds numerous rivers, and oases are distributed along basin edges and river valleys. These oases make up about 5% of the region’s total area, forming a distinct oasis ecosystem.
